EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER.



El grupo fue formado en 1970 por el teclista Keith Emerson, el bajista, guitarrista y cantante Greg Lake y el batería Carl Palmer. Inicialmente iba a llamarse HELP, pues incluiría en sus filas a Jimi Hendrix, pero su muerte en septiembre de 1970, truncó el proyecto.

Emerson provenía del grupo The Nice, que ya había tenido éxito en la onda progresiva con 5 Lp's publicados, uno de ellos con el fabuloso "Five Bridges", una pieza que ocupa toda una cara del disco en directo con una orquesta filarmónica, pero el tema más conocido era el "Rondo", que más tarde EL&P también lo interpretaría en sus actuaciones. Greg Lake participó como bajista y vocalista en los dos primeros álbumes de King Crimson, y Carl Palmer fue batería de Atomic Rooster.

El grupo gozó de gran éxito a inicios de la década del setenta, ganando varios discos de oro en los Estados Unidos y en Inglaterra, generándose varios grupos a su alero, como el alemán Triumvirat. En esta época se publicaron sus mejores trabajos: "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" (1970), "Tarkus" (1971), "Pictures at an Exhibition" (1971), que consistía en la adaptación de la obra homónima de Mussorgsky, "Trilogy" (1972) y "Brain Salad Surgery" (1973), cuyo tema principal es una sensacional epopeya de 29 minutos, más o menos como en "Tarkus".

Su éxito resulta peculiar si se considera que en sus álbumes se puede encontrar música de compositores tan disímiles entre sí como Alberto Ginastera ("Toccata" ), Béla Bartók ("The Barbarian" ) o Aaron Copland ("Fanfare for the Common Man", "Hoedown" ).

Separados momentáneamente a mediados de los setenta tras un triple LP en vivo titulado "Welcome Back my Friends to the Show that Never Ends" (1974), volvieron a unirse en 1976 con cierto éxito, aunque no con la intensidad de sus primeros años. Este regreso dio como resultado tres discos de estudio y uno en vivo. "Works, Vol. 1" (1977) era un doble LP donde cada integrante del grupo se adjudicaba una cara, y sólo trabajaban juntos en la cara restante. El material era bueno en general, pero el problema fue que cada uno de los miembros de la banda trabajaba por su lado, destruyéndose la unión que la banda había tenido desde su formación hasta 1973. Se separaron a finales de esa década, tras publicar "Works, Vol. 2" (1977), a base de recortes y versiones en solitario, algunas no usadas en el primer volumen de Works, "Love Beach" (1978), completamente prescindible, grabado por exigencias de la discográfica, y luego "In Concert" (1979), con fragmentos de la magnífica (aunque económicamente desastrosa) gira de 1977, con orquesta sinfónica incluida. Emerson y Lake se dedicaron a sus carreras solistas, y Palmer se unió al supergrupo Asia.

En 1986, el grupo se reformó como Emerson, Lake & Powell, con el batería Cozy Powell reemplazando a Carl Palmer, ligado por contrato a Asia. Pese al éxito del tema "Touch and Go", el grupo volvió a disolverse. Dos años después, se reformó de nuevo, esta vez como Three, con Emerson, Palmer y el guitarrista, bajista y cantante Robert Berry, pero después de un buen disco, pero con poco éxito comercial, se volvieron a separar.

En los noventas, volvieron a juntarse como Emerson, Lake & Palmer con la edición de dos discos de estudio, "Black Moon" (1992) y "In the Hot Seat" (1994). Con respecto al primero, fue considerado por algunos fans como un excelente regreso, mientras que otros lo consideraron desastroso. El segundo fue grabado en una situación similar a la de Love Beach, era por obligaciones de contrato. En Black Moon destacan algunas canciones, mientras que en In the Hot Seat sólo se puede destacar la nueva versión de "Pictures at an Exhibition", además de otras canciones que hubieran podido funcionar.

Por otro lado, publicaron varios discos en vivo, grabados tanto de esa época como la de antes. Destacan "Works Live" (1993), con el concierto de 1977 entero, "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" (1993), que fue su concierto inaugural de la gira de 1992 (La gira de Black Moon), y "Then & Now" (1998), que contiene dos conciertos: su épica presentación en el California Jam 1974 y un concierto en Roma en 1997. Además, su gran concierto de presentación en el Festival de la Isla de Wight fue oficialmente sacado en disco en 1997.

En 1998 estaban preparando un nuevo disco, cuando hubo una discusión entre Emerson y Lake con respecto a quien sería el productor del disco. Esto acabó con Emerson, Lake & Palmer definitivamente. Emerson volvió a The Nice para una gira mundial, Greg Lake fue bajista de la banda de Ringo Starr en su All-Starr Tour en el 2001, y Palmer se mantiene haciendo constantes giras con su Carl Palmer Band, además de retornar el 2006 al grupo Asia.
